Thousands jam to see Jen-Hsun Huang's keynote at GPU Developers Conference

Robohub

In a 2 hour talk that filled the Keynote Hall and spillover rooms at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center and had thousands of people in line for hours before, Nvidia's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, in characteristic jeans, leather jacket, and humble humor, described the world of graphics processing units (GPUs) with brilliant images and memorable one-liners: Most of Nvidia's revenue comes from GPUs for gaming, super-capable ray-tracing professional graphics, and extraordinarily powerful super computers for data centers. Most of their current research and development is involved with AI-ready chips that enable clients to develop machine and deep learning models and apps. Nvidia is banking on these new development chips to be the chips of the future. In AI-focused healthcare, this covers CLARA, a deep learning engine that uses present-day black and white sonogram, PET and MRI 2D scans and enhances the data to 3D and then color rendering. In the example on the right, a black and white ultrasound sonogram on the left is enhanced into the fully rendered baby picture on the right.

Why Deep Learning Is Suddenly Changing Your Life

#artificialintelligence

Over the past four years, readers have doubtlessly noticed quantum leaps in the quality of a wide range of everyday technologies. Most obviously, the speech-recognition functions on our smartphones work much better than they used to. When we use a voice command to call our spouses, we reach them now. We aren't connected to Amtrak or an angry ex. In fact, we are increasingly interacting with our computers by just talking to them, whether it's Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana, or the many voice-responsive features of Google.

Machine Learning is The Killer App for High Performance Computing

#artificialintelligence

In November 2015 when NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang proposed that "machine learning is high performance computing's first killer app for consumers," there was only sketchy evidence to back up that claim. Today though, it looks like the NVIDIA chief was just a little ahead of his time. He went on to say that "supercomputing technology is in the process of extending well beyond supercomputing itself. These advancements are in the process of revolutionizing consumer applications, cloud services, the auto industry and autonomous machines." When Huang spoke those words at the 2015 Supercomputing Conference (SC15) in Austin, Texas, NVIDIA stock was trading at around $30 per share.

This week the folks at Bosch have revealed their plan to work with NVIDIA to create artificial intelligence self-driving systems for mass market cars. They made this announcement during Bosch Connected World in Berlin, where Bosch CEO Dr. Volkmar Denner showed the system to the public. "Automated driving makes roads safer, and artificial intelligence is the key to making that happen," said Denner. "We are making cars smart." Bosch Connected World is Bosch Group's annual Internet of Things conference.

1 Company Is Already Winning AI -- The Motley Fool

NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) is primarily known as the company that revolutionized computer gaming. The debut of the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) in 1999 provided gamers with faster, clearer, and more lifelike images. The GPU was designed to quickly perform complex mathematical calculations that were necessary to accelerate the creation of realistic graphics. It achieved this feat by performing many functions at the same time, known as parallel computing. This resulted in faster, smoother motion in game graphics and a revolution in modern gaming.

Deep Learning, Cloud Power Nvidia

#artificialintelligence

A stunning third-quarter earnings report from Nvidia (NVDA) recently was lost in the epic Silicon Valley dread over the GOP election victory. That's too bad, because the graphics chip maker's triumph exemplifies why the left coast is wrong to obsess about presidents. While many American technology companies are well aligned for future demands, few are as well positioned in as many critical markets as Nvidia. From high end chipsets for video gaming to deep learning servers for data centers to lunch pail sized super-computers for self-driving cars, the Santa Clara maker of graphics processing units, or GPUs, is the favorite choice of companies looking for state-of-the-art gear. Nvidia is winning because, like much of the rest of top U.S. technology makers, it took smart risks ahead of its peers, and builds the best stuff.
